How To Clean Silver Jewelry Items

It’s true that the market is filled with products that claim to keep silver ornaments clean and shinning. However, it has been found that the majority of those cleaning solutions and polishes contain harsh chemicals. Thus it is always a good idea to use homemade polishes for keeping your valuable silver pieces shiny. Below are some silver jewelry polish recipes that will show great results when used properly.

Recipe 1: The ingredients you will need include two cupful of whole milk and five teaspoons of cream of tartar. If you fail to get tartar, you can use lemon juice or vinegar. Take both the ingredients in a plastic bowl and mix them well. Now, place the silver pieces you want to clean into the mixture. Ideally, you should leave the ornaments in the solution overnight. silver bowl However, if that’s not possible; wait for a minimum of 4 to 5 hours before moving to the next step. The next step would be washing the jewelries meticulously with cold water. Finally, wipe them carefully with a soft and clean towel.

Recipe 2: The main ingredient of this recipe is toothpaste. According to experts, few other substances are capable of cleaning silver pieces as effectively as toothpaste. For best results, you should use a white colored tooth paste and not the gel-type ones. Take the silver ornament you want to polish and cover it well with paste; not a millimeter of the silver surface should be left uncovered. Wait for around 15 minutes and then start cleaning the piece using a soft bristled tooth brush. Keep on brushing the surface until all the spots are removed; never put too much pressure on the ornament when brushing it as it might result in scratching of the surface. Once all the stains are removed successfully, wash the tooth paste off using cold water. Wipe the surface of the jewelry well using a soft piece of fabric before putting it back into the jewelry box.

Recipe 3: For this recipe, you will need the following ingredients: nonsudsing ammonia, liquid bluing (this ingredient is usually available in the laundry section of all grocery stores) and vegetable based liquid soap. Take half cup of each of the above ingredients and mix them with a cupful of hot water. Ideally, you should do the mixing in a plastic container. Shake the mix well and keep the container aside so that the mixture cools down. When the temperature of the solution becomes same as room temperature, soak a soft and clean lint-free piece of cloth into it and apply the solution onto your silver pieces. Once you finish applying the homemade polish, start rubbing the surface of the ornament using gentle strokes. Continue until all the stains are gone. Finally, wash the metal piece carefully using cold water and wipe it with a dry, soft, lint-free cloth.
